Jane Fitch, Reading Specialist

Kerry Winborne Strategic Reading Teacher.

Each of the five junior highs has a reading specialist who provides a variety of services. In a collaborative effort, she works with teachers to develop and promote literacy and thinking strategies in the classroom. As a diagnostician, she administers both group and individual evaluations of reading achievement and recommends activities to build comprehension. Individuals and small groups of students meet with her to receive instruction to build literacy competencies. In addition, the reading specialist works with staff and parents to promote events that support literacy.

If you have questions about the role of the reading specialist or concerns about your child's literacy skills that you would like to discuss, please call Jane Fitch, Washington's reading specialist, at 848-3919 or Kerry Winborne at 630-420-3030

""It is during the middle years of schooling that most students refine their reading preferences, become sophisticated readers of informational text, and lay the groundwork for the lifelong reading habit. They begin to use reading to help answer profound questions about themselves and the world. With good instruction, ample time, and opportunity to read a variety of texts, young adolescents can become successful readers both in and out of school.""
