Washington Students are Global Community Contributors:

Book Drive for Children in Mali

Can you imagine your life without books? After the students of Washington Junior High’s Character Counts committee gave that concept some thought, they mobilized and worked hard to collect over 6,700 books. These books will be used to start a children’s library in Kabarasso, a village in Mali. WJHS students were made aware of the lack of books in this Western African nation through correspondence in their French class. Although most in Mali are French speakers, the donated books will help children learn English.

Help for Haitian Earthquake Relief

Due to the recent devastating earthquake in Haiti, students have collected spare change during their homeroom classes help the people of Haiti. They raised over $2,100 for the Rotary Club of Naperville, which will use the monies to provide "ShelterBoxes," which supply an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. The cost is estimated at $1,000 per unit. For more information, visit http://www.shelterboxusa.org/ Their original goal was to raise enough money to provide one “ShelterBox,” but staff and students surpassed that number with their generosity.

The students of Washington Junior High are fine examples of a very important strand of our District 203 Mission Statement: Community Contributor.
