Helping Hand Program

Dear Parent:

The Helping Hand Program was established in 1967 through combined efforts of the Naperville Junior Woman's Club, School District 203 and the Naperville Police Department.

The purpose of the Helping Hand Program is to have adult assistance available in an emergency situation, such as a child being lost, frightened, injured or ill.  The police department encourages Helping Hand households to display the Helping Hand sign year-round as a crime deterrent similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program.  If a child comes to your door needing assistance, you would be asked to comply with the following rules:

• Call the police immediately if a child comes to your door that is seriously injured,ill, lost or frightened.
• In case of injury or illness, do not administer any first aid except to restore breathing or stop excessive bleeding.  Do not offer any food, beverage or medication.  The child may be allergic or diabetic.
• Do not transport the child in your car.

If you would like to become a Helping Hand volunteer, please fill out the application completely.   The Naperville Police Department will do background checks on all adult members of the house who volunteer for this program.   The purpose of this check is to make the Helping Hand Program as safe as possible for our children.  Accordingly, it is necessary to reapply for volunteer status every 2-3 years.  This process can take up to three months depending on how many applications they receive, so please be patient.  When you are approved, the Naperville Police Department will send me an updated list of applicants and I will deliver your sign as soon as I receive the list.  Application forms can be turned in to the school office or by mailing them to:

Walking with Dogs

If you walk your dog to school we ask that your dog is on a leash at all times. In addition please keep in mind the following school policy:

• No dogs are allowed in the front of the building. Please stop on the sidewalk before the bus loading zone on Warwick.
• Coming from the east, please stop at the safety patrol on the corner of the carpool lane.
• Coming from the west, please stop before you reach the playground equipment.

Driving Safety

PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY

• Observe the 20 mph speed limit.
• All children who are driven to school must be picked up and dropped off in the driveway in front of school.
• Children should not be picked up or dropped off on Warwick Drive.
• Children should not be picked up or dropped off in the cul-de-sac on Warwick or walk across Warwick to a parked car.
• Park only in accordance with posted signs.
• Do not leave your car unattended in the carpool lane.
• Pull forward in the carpool lane when possible.
• Do not turn right onto Naper Blvd. when the crossing guard and/or children are in the crosswalk.
• Follow all staff member directions.
