HOME AND SCHOOL - VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
If you would like to become involved in any of the items listed below, please feel free to contact the Committee Chair (listed in school directory) or Diana Derbas.
Service and Support
BEAUTIFICATION
Do you love gardening? River Woods has a long-term plan for landscaping around the exterior of the building. The landscaping is beautiful and is specifically designed to use as an educational tool. Volunteers are needed for planning, planting and maintaining the gardens.
ASSEMBLIES (JUST IN TIME)
Assemblies provide significant curriculum support just when the specific grade level is studying a particular topic (just in time). Volunteers work with the Instructional Coordinator in the early fall to coordinate assemblies, are present the day of the assemblies to greet the presenter and help with any needs the presenter may have. If you enjoy the fine arts, this might be an opportunity you'd enjoy.
COMMUNITY SERVICE / STUDENT COUNCIL
Volunteers work with student council to coordinate various service projects benefiting local groups or organizations.
COFFEE AND CONVERSATION
These socials are geared towards developing the adult social community. Join other parents several times in the year for great conversation and information sharing! Volunteers help organize these events.
FIELD DAY
Field Day is an exciting day of outdoor fun and games for the entire school held at the end of the school year. Many volunteers are needed in the morning and afternoon to run games.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Volunteers are needed to run the Helping hand Program along with scheduling volunteers for the Hearing and Vision testing done at school.
HOSPITALITY (STAFF APPRECIATION)
Volunteers plan various meals for the staff throughout the school year and arrange gifts for the staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.
ICE CREAM SOCIALS
Twice a year, Home & School sponsors an ice cream social for students and families. Volunteer help out the afternoon/evening of the event.
RIVER DAYS CARNIVAL
The River Days Carnival is held every year in February. This family event includes games, a Cake Walk, a Bake Sale, food concessions, teacher sponsored and classroom basket raffles. Volunteers are needed to head the various carnival committees (scheduling, decorations, cake walk, bake sale, food concessions, floor manager, and redemption center). Volunteers are also needed to staff activities the day of the carnival.
ROOM PARENTS
Parents from each classroom are needed to plan and organize (after collaboration with the classroom teacher) the Halloween, Winter and Valentine parties. Room parents also often coordinate classroom teacher gifts.
SCHOOL STORE
School Store is provided as a service and is responsible for putting together bags of school supplies at the beginning of the school year for all students who have purchased their items through the school store. School Store also maintains an inventory of items that are not available in stores throughout the school year as well as Band items. Volunteers assist with filling orders for school supplies at the beginning of the year.
SPIRIT WEAR
Spirit Wear is clothing with the River Woods Elementary logo sold as a service to River Woods students, families and teachers. Volunteers are needed to compile the order forms and to distribute the clothing when it comes in.
YEARBOOK
The Yearbook committee publishes a yearbook at the end of the school year. This book is a wonderful compilation of many of the events that happen during the school year. Individual student pictures are displayed in class composites. Volunteers take pictures at school events throughout the year, layout copy and photos, and process yearbook orders.
Communication
NEWSLETTER – RED BIRD NEWS
Here's an opportunity to help spread news about River Woods Elementary happenings to other River Woods parents. Volunteers are needed to solicit, edit, and layout articles on a monthly basis for the Red Bird News.
DIRECTORY
The directory is a very useful family phone book providing student names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Volunteers are needed in August to verify information.
NOMINATIONS
The Nominations Committee (made up of volunteer parents, current Home and School President(s) and the building administrators) is responsible for soliciting volunteers as well as running the election for the Home and School Executive Board. The committee assists in recruiting chair people for the Home and School Committees.
Financial
SILENT AUCTION AND ADULT SOCIAL
The Silent Auction and Adult Social, to be held in Fall, promises a fun night and great community fundraiser for Home & School. Volunteers are needed to help organize the event. Additionally, the Silent Auction Committee needs volunteers to solicit businesses and individuals to contribute items or services to be auctioned at the event and to assemble baskets.
MARKET DAY
Market Day sells name-brand food products to raise funds for the school. Flyers are distributed monthly and orders are placed via flyers or online. Volunteers are needed to sort the food items and fill orders. Come once a month to socialize and help your school.
WRAPPING PAPER SALE
The Fall Wrapping Paper Sale is an important fundraiser held at the beginning of the year for Home and School. Volunteers are needed to help with the order forms and to distribute the wrapping paper
BLR'S (GENERAL MILLS BOX TOPS CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS, MEIJER REWARDS, AND TARGET REBATES)
Labels are collected from Campbell's products and are redeemed for LRC merchandise. General Mills box top labels are collected and redeemed for cash. Volunteers are needed to collect, clip and sort labels once a month. This is a great job for parents who are looking for a job to do at home! Target and Meijer offer rebate programs which provide funds when parents use their store credit card and have indicated River Woods Elementary as the recipient of the rebate.
CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
The certificate program sells gift cards from local restaurants, retailers, and the Naperville Downtown Alliance. A percentage of these sales are returned to River Woods. Volunteers are needed to distribute flyers, collect, place and distribute orders.
FLOWER SALE
In winter and the late spring, beautiful flowers are sold (poinsettias in winter and nursery planting flowers in spring). Volunteers are needed for half a day to help unload a truck and sort these lovely flowers into individual orders.
All parents are invited to assist. If you would like to become involved in any of the items listed below, please feel free to contact the Committee Chair (listed in school directory) or Diana Derbas.
