4-5 Intermediate Overview

A multi-age classroom is a classroom of two or more grade levels that have been intentionally blended together.  The goal of this blended structure is to improve the individual child's social and academic skills in an atmosphere of cooperation rather than competition.  The child's developmental needs stands out as a defining characteristic of the multi-age concept.
 

    • Curriculum follows district objectives for 4th and 5th grades.  The curriculum is on a two-year cycle.
    • Guided choices and opportunities for decision-making are provided for students under the guidance of the teacher.
    • Criteria reflects expectations of teacher and as standards are internalized by students -- they also help to determine criteria for learning tasks.
    • Evaluation is on a continuum so tasks can be assessed at age-appropriate levels.
    • Teacher is responsible for instruction and remediation.  Children work at their level -- independently and in groups.  Older students are not expected to be peer tutors.
    • Every effort is made to maintain peer interactions with other 4th and 5th grade students (lunch, recess, math, assemblies, etc.)  We blend the two grades in our classroom for all activities.  An exception is Outdoor Education, which is restricted to fifth grade students only.  Math is grouped according to grade levels to accommodate the honors program.  Mrs. Scheuerman teaches the regular fourth grade math curriculum, and Mrs. Ullestad teaches the fifth grade curriculum.
    • Groupings are flexible within and across our two classrooms.
