Battle of the Books is a Book Club open to fourth and fifth grade students. The goals of this program are to encourage elementary students to read quality books and to read as widely as possible in their leisure time.  The district Battle of the Books committee provides a list of forty children's books, which is the basis for the district's annual Battle of the Books competition in the spring.  Each student is given a list representing top quality books at different reading levels and a wide variety of genres that are rich in content.

Battle of the Books Club
From September through February fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to attend meetings of the River Woods Battle of the Books Club which is held every other Friday on the stage during lunch/recess.  Students listen to and present books talks, discuss books, and participate in games and other activities related to the books being discussed.  The  Club is facilitated by Battle of the Books coach, Mrs. Mary Beth Losch.

The Battle of the Books Team
In February, students may choose to try for a position on the Battle of the Books team by taking a test which asks questions on each of the forty books.  One team of fourth grade students and one team of fifth grade students are selected based on test scores.  These teams compete with other district schools in April at the Battle of the Books competition.
