About Prairie Home and School

Prairie Home and School Association

The Association's purpose has been to promote closer cooperation and understanding between schools and the home. All Prairie parents, teachers, and staff are automatically considered members of the Association. In addition, Prairie School is automatically a member of District 203's General Home and School Association, which serves as the coordinating organization for all the schools in District 203. What follows is a brief history explaining how the Home and School Association was formed.

In the early part of the century, the Naperville schools belonged to the National Parent Teacher's Association. Membership meant that part of the local PTA dues were sent to their national headquarters. During the depression, the question arose as to the wisdom of paying dues to the National PTA. It was felt that Naperville's interest could best be served by retaining the entire amount of the dues and functioning as an autonomous group. In 1931 a meeting was called where advocates of both groups presented their views. When a vote was taken a large majority of members voted to withdraw from PTA and they formed a local organization known as the Naperville Home and School Association.

At Prairie School, the Home and School Association Board consists of elected officers, a faculty representative, the Principal, Assistant Principal, and standing committee chairpersons. Meetings of the Association Board are held monthly and are open to all interested Prairie parents, teachers and staff.
