Freshman Seminar

The purpose of this course is to help freshmen students become independent learners and strategic readers and thinkers. The course focuses on student comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. Students are given opportunities to develop and apply reading/study strategies to assignments from Communication Arts, history, and science assignments.

Sophomore Seminar

The purpose of this course is to help sophomore students become independent learners and strategic readers and thinkers. The course focuses on student learning skills and strategies needed to improve their performance on standardized tests. Students will develop and apply reading/study strategies to Communication Arts, history, and science assignments.

Writing Enhancement

Based on a diagnostic writing assessment given to all incoming freshmen, those students who qualify are assisted in their writing on a weekly basis by a trained tutor. Additional assessments are given every four weeks during the first semester until the student demonstrates proficiency of writing skills established by the Communication Arts Department.

Prairie State Test Prep

The purpose of our course is to help students accomplish the following:

  1. to reduce test anxiety and build confidence
  2. to become familiar with the content, format, and pacing of the ACT/Work Keys test
  3. to develop test awareness and test-taking skills

These objectives are met through repeated practice of effective strategies.

Peer Tutoring

Trained tutors provide one on one assistance in all content areas, in all grade levels, for students of all abilities. Available all periods of the day including before school, tutors work with "drop-ins" or those students that have reserved a weekly session.

Technology Tutoring

Tutors trained in various computer software programs provide technical assistance for students with tasks involving film editing, PowerPoint, PhotoStory presentations, and internet searches.
