Business

The Business Technology Department offers a wide variety of courses to meet the many needs of our students and community. Students may enroll in these courses to develop personal use or employable business skills. All Business Technology courses teach and/or reinforce basic skills. Many students enroll in business courses to prepare themselves for advanced training at the college or post-secondary level. A student may receive on-the-job training, receiving credit and wages, by selecting Internship courses - Marketing Internship or Business Internship. All courses fulfill the Career and Technical Education graduation requirement.

Business Foundations

 

303210 , 303211         INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

This course is highly recommended for freshman and sophomore students who are interested in learning how to function effectively in the business world. Some of the topics included in this course of study are the economy, banking and saving, investing in the stock market, accounting principles, marketing, management and leadership skills required to become successful in the business world. The application and importance of business etiquette and ethics will be introduced. One highlight of the course includes a visit to the Chicago Board of Trade, the Mercantile Exchange, and the Federal Reserve Bank. Additionally, the students will participate in a Stock Market trade competition. Students will also engage in an entrepreneurial ship unit to enhance their understanding of what is involved in owning their own businesses. After completing this course, students will understand how the different components of the business world operate and interact with each other, and will gain exposure to the skills necessary to function well in today's changing economy.

 In the course you will improve your ability to use the Internet as a research tool. You will learn how to incorporate Excel graphs into your work and take your Power Point skills to a higher level. Even students who key more than 40 words per minute will greatly benefit from this course. You will improve your speed and accuracy by learning the touch method. Additionally, you will learn how to format reports, memorandums, resumes and tables. Knowing how to key efficiently in college is a must. No matter what profession you choose, you will be working with computers; therefore ""Technology & Keyboarding"" is a necessity.

303480 , 303481         BUSINESS COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

The student will learn the current methods of preparing and designing the spreadsheet, data base, graphs and presentation documents for the educational, business and professional environments using Microsoft Office and the Internet. Students will develop commonly used documents: budgets, sales forecasts, survey analysis, sales reports, inventories, membership lists and informative presentations. The students will also learn how to enter numerical information quickly, perform calculations, format numbers appropriately, and enhance the appearance of documents. Concepts will be presented and followed by a hands-on computer application problem.

303502 , 303503         ONLINE CONSUMER EDUCATION

Students will fulfill their Consumer Education requirement online by using a specially developed program which allows them to complete and submit all assignments electronically. This course is for disciplined learners, who are HIGHLY motivated and self-directed with excellent work habits. It is imperative for students to submit assignments by the due date in order to be successful. Students will be required to meet the high school teacher three times during the semester. Class sizes are limited per semester.

303392 - 303393         BUSINESS INTERNSHIP
Earn income and credits while you explore a business careers including computer programming, accounting, networking, computer repair, administrative assistants, graphic design, web-page design, or banking. Do you want to be a lawyer and connect more directly with that profession? Or is it engineering that you aspire to? Why not get a jump start and acquire real hands on experiences in an engineering firm. Whatever your career choice, you can enjoy the opportunities that come with working alongside professionals that can help you learn more about your field of interest. You will enhance your job and college applications through the related club, Business Professionals of America, discovering competition, awards, travel, community service, and new friends. Membership in Business Professionals of America is optional. One credit for the class and one credit for the job will be earned in this full year program.

Earn income and credits at the same time with our marketing internship program! Are you interested in pursuing a career in marketing, sports marketing, management, sales, hospitality, tourism, business services, or would you like to be an entrepreneur? This program will provide you with hands-on experience at a job in a related field to your interests. You will develop teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills necessary for success along with focusing on career and job searching strategies. Through participation in the marketing club, DECA, you will enjoy opportunities of competition, leadership, awards, travel, community service, and new friends. Membership in DECA Club is optional. One credit for the class and one credit for the job will be earned in this full year program.

Take this course if you are planning to major in business administration, management, finance, personnel relations, accounting, marketing, or other business-related fields. You will become acquainted with management principles used in business today. You will participate in discussion groups, read trade journals and financial publications, and create and write solutions to management problems. You will also participate in running a student led business.

303430 , 303431         BUSINESS LAW

This course offers practical knowledge of Business Law and general law issues. Topics include court procedures, civil law, criminal law, white collar crime, contracts, employment law, intellectual property, and types of a business. Class discussion, case studies, current events, small group work, projects and guest speakers are all methods used. All students apply what they have learned as a witness or attorney in a mock trial on a business law issue.

Everyone is affected by marketing. There is hardly anything you do that does not involve marketing activities. Students will learn marketing techniques, business concepts, marketing research techniques, information management, product planning, pricing and promotion. Speakers, the Internet and trade journals are used to keep information current. This course is recommended for college-bound business majors and for those who enroll in Marketing Internship.

303413            ADVANCED MARKETING
Are you considering majoring in business and/or marketing? This course will give you hands-on experience developing a practical marketing plan. Advanced Marketing gives students the opportunity to take the fundamentals they learned in Marketing and apply this knowledge in real-life situations. Students will work with local businesses and school organizations to develop authentic promotional plans for execution. Students will have the opportunity to participate in an out-of-state field trip to see marketing in action.

A recent survey given to college students asking the course they wished they had taken in high school showed the most frequent response to be Accounting. Accounting is also one of the biggest areas of growth in the job market. Students planning to operate their own business or major in business in college will find this course a must. This course utilizes Quick Books Accounting Software as students learn how to work with journals, ledgers, balance sheets, income and capital statements. This course fulfills a math requirement for graduation, and students are eligible to receive articulated credit through COD. Accounting is an important course that will prepare you for a job, give you a solid background for any business study in college, and provide you with an understanding of how financial decisions are made.

303372 - 303373         ACCOUNTING II 

In this advanced course you will apply accounting principles for partnerships, corporations, and departments. Students will use spreadsheet software to create financial statements for all units studied. Topics covered in Accounting 2 include: accruals, prepaid expenses, income received in advance, vouchers, notes receivable and payable, and capital stock. Simulations are utilized to allow students to assume the role of an accountant. This course builds a solid foundation for business majors at the college level and students are eligible to receive dual credit through COD.

303432            INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
 Because global economy is now a reality, international business is a priority in the business world. Through hands-on experience, computer activities and business simulations, students will understand the marketing, finance, and management challenges facing international business. In addition, speakers who are involved with international business and local business will share knowledge from the "real world". This course offers students the opportunity to become informed about economic, multi-cultural and political factors that affect international business and our continually changing global economy.

Students will learn to design publications using Quark Express, PhotoShop and the Internet. Desktop publishing concepts and software procedures will be taught by utilizing "hands on" practice and applications. The professional elements of design and page layout will be studied and applied to a wide range of graphic and text-intensive projects including invitations, announcements, flyers, brochures, menus, and newsletters.

303482 - 303483         DESKTOP PUBLISHING/YEARBOOK

The yearbook course has been designed to provide students with journalism skills and the ability to apply those skills to the actual production of the yearbook. Areas of study include: teamwork, responsibility brainstorming, content, coverage, concept, production, reporting, writing, headline, captions, editing, photography, editing, design, and distribution. Actual work results in the current volume of the school's yearbook. The publication strives to maintain a tradition of excellence in which the school and the community can take pride. Mastery of the goals and objectives fully verse staff members in all areas of publication production and students should be able to pursue journalism with a strong background either in their advanced studies or in a career.

The student will learn the life skill of word processing using Microsoft Office and the Internet. Throughout the semester, the student will be guided step by step, with hands-on instruction at a comfortable pace. Utilizing the word processing features, including enhancements, bullets, outlines, thesaurus, macros, merge, search/replace, columns and graphics, students will learn to format professional-looking documents. This course receives articulated credit at College of DuPage. See instructor or counselor for information.

303486 , 303487         MULTIMEDIA DESIGN & PRESENTATIONS

Learn how to create appealing and cutting edge multimedia and web pages. This course covers the applications for Macromedia Flash, Fireworks and Free-Hand software. Flash is used to create small fast loading animations (animated logos and long-form animations). Fireworks is a graphics program used to create and edit images. Dreamweaver is used to visually design Web pages. FreeHand is a vector illustration tool. This course will teach you how to use and integrate these tools to create rich and dynamic applications.

303450 , 303451         COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 1 

Computer logic is an important skill in today's world whether you are interested in business, economics, science or computer science. Students will learn the Python programming language to solve various business application programs. Topics include: inputting/outputting data, modular programming, functions/methods, decisions, loops and data structures such as tuples and lists. Alice will also be utilized to expose students to programming concepts in a 3D world. Emphasis is placed on writing structured programs that are user-friendly. Students will apply what they learn to create programs and applications that solve real world business related problems.

303453            COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 2 

This course is for those who want to expand their knowledge of programming. Students will use Alice and Python to write more complex programs using events, graphical user interfaces, classes, and file input/output. Stress is placed on problem solving and writing structured programs.

303455            VISUAL BASIC 

Students are excited about writing in Visual BASIC because it allows for creativity and individualizing of programs. Business and industry have adopted VB as a popular, easy-to-use language. This class will teach the student to build applications in a graphical/Windows environment and save it as an executable program. Computer Programming 1 provides a student with a background in logic and control structures; now they will learn to design programs using text boxes, label controls, data controls and command buttons.

303464 - 303465          Advanced Placement  Computer Programming

AP Computer Programming will cover advanced structured programming utilizing JAVA. Students will learn object based programming, arrays, matrices, sorting, structures and classes and methods. This course will require students to learn many new features of a programming language. Previous classes in computer programming will compliment the logic of this course. The material covered for this course will prepare students to take the College Board Advanced Placement Exam in computer science. This is an AP class; therefore this will be a weighted course.

303460 , 303461         WEB DESIGN AND PROGRAMMING 

This course is an introduction to Web Page Design using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It emphasizes the creation of effective web pages using HTML and CSS. JavaScript programming is also covered if time permits. Other topics include exploring simple graphics and the insertion of applets in a web page. The application of web site development for E-Commerce is also explored.

303458 , 303459         LOCAL AND WIDE AREA NETWORKING 

The LAN WAN/Network+ Certification course is designed to equip both novice and experienced students with entry-level computer networking proficiencies. The course is aligned with the industry standard CompTIA Network+ Certification to cover networking topics in a one semester course.   Students will become adept with key computer networking hardware topics like topologies, cabling, NICs, hubs, switches, and routers. Additionally, students will orient themselves to networking software topics like the OSI model, protocols, TCP/IP, network operating systems, network security, and troubleshooting. The course includes lectures, demonstrations and videos on theories of operation including real-life projects for the student to explore. Significant lab time is provided to offer the student authentic hands-on experiences in working with computers and networks. The course follows an industry-recognized curriculum and is recommended for students who enjoy computers and/or students who might have a career interest in Information Technology leading to a professional certification.
