Dear Parents of Juniors:        During the junior year, students take a number of standardized tests.  Some of these are required (for high school graduation or college admission), and some are optional.  The process to register for these tests and deciding which to take can be very confusing.  For this reason, we are providing a program on Wednesday, September 22nd, at 7:00 PM in the NNHS Auditorium.  At this meeting, we will provide an overview of ALL of the tests (ACT, SAT, SAT II, PSAT, PSAE and AP) as well as a timeline of suggested post high school planning steps that we recommend to junior students.  We encourage you to attend!  SEE BELOW ("Spotlights") for more information, including a PSAT announcement.

A new TalkNNHS updated on August 22 is posted.  This TalkNNHS has information about Key Summer Dates and Registration Mailings.  Just check the permanent link to TalkNNHS at the top of the right hand column.  See the orange & blue Huskie pawprint?  That icon will open to the TalkNNHS Weekly E-Newsletter.  Try it!

 "New this year!—the high schools are offering a "reduced lunch" option  as part of the Federal "Free and Reduced" meal program.  Qualified high school students can receive a ""reduced"" price lunch this year.  Any incoming freshman, or returning high school student, who was approved for a ""reduced"" lunch last year (though we did not offer the option last year) is now eligible to receive a "reduced" lunch. From the first day of school, a qualified student will present his or her meal card at the cash register and the system will recognize his or her eligibility.  A student's eligibility for a  Reduced Lunch will continue until September 30.  Unless a student already has been notified that they have "continuing  eligibility" for the 2010-2011 school year, they must re-apply by September 30 to be eligible for the remainder of the year.  If you have questions call 630-420-6599 or email Sodexho@naperville203.org.""

The 2010 National Honor Society application for membership is available at http://sites.google.com/site/nnhuskienhs/.  The application is due by 3:30pm on Friday, September 3rd for seniors and 3:30pm on Wednesday, September 15th for juniors.  If students have questions, they should check the FAQ at http://sites.google.com/site/nnhuskienhs/ or email Mr. Girup at kgirup@naperville203.org.

SPOTLIGHT

PSAT Info, October 16; Sign-Up by Sept 14

The PSAT occurs on Saturday, October 16th and is one of the ""optional"" tests that juniors may take.  Registration for the PSAT begins September 7th and goes through the 14th.  The cost is $20.00.  ""Late"" registration (at an additional fee) will be September 15-17.  If you are unsure whether your student should take the PSAT, you may call your student's counselor. The PSAT is a ""practice"" SAT.  It is NOT used for college admission but will provide a good indicator of how your student will perform on the SAT and it provides excellent practice for standardized tests in general.  The most notable factor about the PSAT is that it is the only qualifying test for National Merit Awards.  In order to qualify as a ""National Merit Semi-Finalist"" or ""National Achievement Semi-Finalist"" or for ""National Hispanic Recognition,"" a student has to take the PSAT during his or her junior year and score above a particular benchmark.  For this reason we encourage ALL of our juniors who have a 4.0 GPA and above to take the PSAT!  Some students choose to take additional ""test prep"" coursework specifically for the PSAT.  That information is posted on the Student Services section of the Naperville North High School website. We look forward to working with you and your junior during this very exciting school year!   If you have any questions, feel free to call Jeffery Farson, Director of Student Services, at 420-6410.

Seniors! Senior Parents! "First Day of School for Seniors"

At its best "tradition" is associated with respect and pride; sometimes with joy, sometimes with solemnity.  At Naperville North High School, we cultivate traditions of which all members of our school community can be proud.  Senior year at NNHS provides Huskie students with excellent, positive, inclusive traditions such as Senior Celebration, Senior Commemorative, and Exit With Pride at the Beach.  The "First Day of Senior Year" should be among the positive traditions for seniors as well.  We want this event to be celebratory and joyful, but also a source of pride for everyone involved.  To ensure that it is, the "First Day of Senior Year" for senior students will proceed as follows:
1. Seniors have the privilege of wearing school-approved
class T-shirts (men), appropriate Senior theme costumes (men and women), and togas (women).  Please make sure that all clothing follows the school dress code;
2. Seniors will be allowed to enter the athletic parking lot
beginning at 6:00 AM.  They will have opportunity to socialize and "tailgate." Seniors may bring grills, coolers, and food to cook.  The cooking must be done in designated areas inside the wrought iron gates of the stadium; its dangerous to cook among the cars.
3. At about 7:55 AM, Seniors will be allowed to enter
the building, but only through Entrance #19.  We will "release the hounds!"  At this time, class will already be in session for the underclassmen.  While Seniors will be able to celebrate and express their excitement, it is absolutely important that no Senior enters a classroom, damage property, or scare or intimidate any other student.  Seniors must respond to the directions of school personnel when we indicate that it is time for Seniors to report to their first period classes.  Attendance will be taken.  Ultimately, we want you to have a safe, memorable, and exciting senior year.  We appreciate your support in taking an active role in making the upcoming school year a positive one for all.  (There is a more detailed explanation of the guidelines for "First Day of Senior Year" in the summer registration mailing).

Information Regarding NNHS 2011 SENIOR Yearbook ADS
Naperville North High School has teamed up with The Yearbook Company to offer you the highest quality and customer service available.  It's hard to believe, but in just a few short months, your student's stay at Naperville North High School will be nothing more than a memory. We're doing our best to put together a yearbook that will help your student remember the best of his or her final year forever. Unfortunately, try as we might, there is no way that we can possibly capture how proud you are of your child or put into words all that you must be feeling. But that doesn't mean that you can't tell your student yourself. Proud parents can purchase space in the back of the yearbook and tell him or her how proud they are: in their own words and using their own photos! You can acknowledge your child and support the yearbook program at the same time. (Senior ads  are a fund-raiser for the yearbook.) All you need to do is fill out the enclosed form, follow the instructions on how to submit your photos and message, attach a check for the appropriate amount or enclose the proper credit card information, and get everything to us, postmarked by September 1, 2010, to take advantage of the earliest submission discount. But you can continue to purchase your dedications up until December 1, 2010 (please see order form for pricing details). You can also submit and purchase your dedication online by uploading a scanned or digital image (at least 300 dpi) and your message at www.theyearbookcompany.com.

If you have any questions, or to find out answers to frequently asked questions, please visit  www.theyearbookcompany.com or call 951-274-9561. Please do not contact the school. To help the yearbook staff make its deadlines and insure accuracy, they have contracted with us, The Yearbook Company, to process all of their student advertising. That means you cannot drop off your advertising at the school, but must mail it in a separate envelope to Naperville North High School Senior Ads, The Yearbook
Company, 7177 Brockton Ave., Suite 105, Riverside, CA 92506. While we do our best to get pictures back to parents, we suggest that before you mail in that precious family keepsake, you may want to have a professional copy (on photo paper) made. But please don't send us just a regular color copy or computer printout - those DO NOT reproduce well. If the photo is blurred or pixelated, we cannot make it any clearer. We want you to be happy with your ad and the photo quality to be in line with the school's standards.
