And the Beat Goes On

Band is in full “swing” this fall at Naper School.  We have a number of new faces in our band this year, as well as returning students and a  variety of instruments being learned and played.  Several performance events are scheduled, our first being the 5th grade Honor Band auditions on October  21st at Meadow Glens School.  Any prepared  5th grade band student may audition for this all District 203 Elementary Honor Band.  Rehearsals will begin on Wednesdays after school in November, at  WJHS and culminate with a grand concert on February 16th at the NCHS Auditorium.  Honor Band help sessions are available to students.  A parent information letter detailing Honor Band was sent home with students  in September .

All band students are working on goals in their band materials within their lesson groups.  Parents can help by encouraging regular at-home practice and checking practice logs in student books.  Students have goal  expectation sheets and we are now beginning our “Prepared Musician” Band Bucks incentives.   A little practice on a regular basis makes for great music habits as well as noticeable progress!

Naper Winds

Our Naper Winds is a voluntary group of band students of all instruments.  They meet once a week before school for the experience of playing different parts in music and literature styles.  Students have another opportunity to play their instruments and relate to other instruments and music parts.  Special thanks to all the parents who transport their band students to early morning rehearsals for the Naper Winds and for providing breakfast snacks.

Practice and Achievement

It seems that families and individuals are becoming more and more busy with activities.  However, playing a musical instrument, just like any activity, sport, or other special involvement, does require practice.  Practice on a regular basis will allow for much faster success and a more enjoyable experience of playing the instrument.  I encourage parents to help their children with regular practice time.  Even a few more minutes on a regular weekly routine will probably yield a noticeable difference.  Additionally, private lesson instruction is another option to pursue for students.  Lists of area teachers are available.

Very musically,

Michelle Ryan, Band Director
