Growing enrollment at Mill Street School was a topic of discussion at the February 16 Board of Education meeting. While the goal of the recent renovation has been achieved in terms of providing more appropriate learning spaces, thus eliminating the use of hallways for instruction, Mill Street School now faces the reality of an enrollment that has grown to 821 students. In fact, revised projections estimate enrollment will reach 839 students in the 2010-2011 school year and 851 students in the following year, far outrunning the previous projections of 818 and 829 respectively.

The opening of the Ann Reid Early Childhood Center, and resultant movement of those classes from Elmwood Elementary, has created a unique opportunity to relieve the overcrowding at Mill Street. Reassigning those households which are contiguous to Elmwood’s northwest boundaries will create room at Mill Street School. Students reassigned to Elmwood will be attending a significantly smaller school in terms of enrollment, with the same District 203 quality curriculum and instruction. Affected households constitute the southern portion of the Willoway subdivision and Jefferson Estates, bordered by Jefferson Street on the north, Ogden Avenue on the west, Aurora Avenue on the south and the DuPage River on the east (grid codes 320114, 320115 and 320122). To determine what homes this encompasses, please view the District 203 grid code map.

The Board of Education will be discussing this topic at its March 1 and March 15 meetings, both of which are held at the District 203 Administrative Center, 203 W. Hillside Road, Naperville, beginning at 7 PM. The intent is that the Board will take action on March 15. Click here for more details.

IF a late start or snow day is declared, parents and staff will be notified in the early morning via email and telephone call. This decision will also be posted on the District 203 website by 5:45 AM. Barring notification to the contrary, school will be in session as usual.

In early December, Naperville School District 203 announced the creation of a late start schedule as a POSSIBLE alternative to declaring a snow day. Because inclement weather in the early morning can sometimes lead to a decision to close the schools for an entire day, District 203’s new late start schedule provides the flexibility to begin the school day two hours later than normal (high schools will begin 1.75 hours later), to allow time for roads to be cleared and the temperature to rise.

“By employing a late start schedule on wintery days, we can still provide a quality educational experience without compromising safety or losing a whole day of instruction,” said Superintendent Mark Mitrovich.

For full information, including drop-off and school start schedules by level, see the Late Start & School Closings page. Dismissal times will remain as normal.
