First grade at Maplebrook is a year of enthusiastic learning and tremendous growth.  First graders will learn many strategies for word attack and comprehension to help them become strong readers.  Reading is presented in a variety of settings, such as guided reading groups, independent reading, and shared reading.  First graders will grow as writers though a writer's workshop approach.  We will celebrate them as authors with a special tea at the end of the year.

In math, first graders develop number sense, strategies for addition and subtraction, and explore geometry in many ways.  Math involves the use of manipulatives, playing learning games, doing mental math, problem solving, and authentic practice.

Social science and science allow the students to explore and learn about the world around them.  First graders build friendships, learn how solve problems, develop independence, and have taken their first steps to becoming life long learners.
