Study Tips

School counselors are specialists with training in both education and counseling. They are certified by the state of Illinois and use their training and skills to work with students, teachers, parents and other school professionals to encourage students to reach their potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Naperville Unit School District 203 follows the developmental counseling model to help students and their families in the following areas:

  • Academic Development
  • Career Development
  • Personal/Social Development

Students are assigned to schoolcounselors in sixth-grade and will remain with that counselor through eighth grade. When they enter high school, they will be assigned a new counselor to work with through graduation.

ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT Students will explore and acquire the academic preparation necessary to choose from a variety of educational, training and employment options upon successful completion of high school.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Students will investigate the world of work in order to make educated and informed career decisions.

PERSONAL/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Students will acquire an understanding of, and respect for, self and others, and the skills to be responsible and to be contributing members of the community.

School counselors build trust and establish helping relationships. They respect the privacy of information, always considering actions in terms of the rights, integrity, and welfare of students. Counselors are obligated by law and ethical standards to report and to refer a case when a person's welfare is in jeopardy. It is a counselor's duty to inform an individual of the conditions and limitations under which assistance may be provided.
