Foreign Language

World Language Philosophy Statement

We believe that language and communication are at the heart of the human experience.  They allow us to relate meaningfully with one another.  The goals of our foreign language instruction are to enable students to communicate effectively in the second language, to understand the cultures that support the language, to see connections between language study and other disciplines, and to appreciate what it means to live in a global community.

The foreign language classroom will provide an environment conducive to a successful language experience.  A rich variety of standards-based strategies and resources will be utilized so that all students can experience both acquisition and learning.  Instruction will include realistic and meaningful learning opportunities which provide challenging, engaging, and authentic activities that promote increased proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in the target language.

As a result of our curriculum, instruction, and learning environment, District 203 foreign language students will experience the utility and beauty of the language they study.  They will recognize the benefits of reflection and continued learning.  At each level, students will have the opportunity to develop increased proficiency in the target language and a deeper insight into their own language, while growing in their respect for the cultures and beliefs of others.

Middle Level World Languages

French, German or Spanish                         7th and 8th grade

Foreign Language is a two-year program that must be chosen in seventh grade.  This is the same Level I program that is taught in the high schools.  In the middle school program, students may choose to acquire one of three languages:  French, German or Spanish.  At the end of the two-year program, students will have developed the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as understanding and appreciating different cultures and customs.  It is important that students learn the vocabulary and structures of the language, which are included in the content, and use that content in a communicative and relevant way.  In order to create a communicative model, students will interact frequently and meaningfully in the target language.

It is expected that students who successfully complete the two-year sequence will be enrolled in a Level II course in high school.  If you have any questions, you may contact Deborah Davison at (630) 420-3446 or ddavison@naperville203.org.
