Teacher Biography

My name is David Hollander, and I have been teaching at Kennedy since 1991.  I began teaching in Naperville at Lincoln Junior High, where I taught for two years before moving to Kennedy. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in history from DePauw University in 1987.  At Kennedy, I have been teaching U.S. history since 1992.

In addition to teaching, I coach both eighth grade boys' and seventh grade girls' basketball. I have been coaching basketball since I arrived, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. I used to coach football, but I gave that up to be a bit more available to my own kids and their activities.

I have been married to Amy, your science teacher, since 1989.  We have a daughter named Sarah, who is a student at Naperville Central, and a son named Nathan, who is finishing at Lincoln.  My wife and I met at DePauw.  Amy is a graduate of Jefferson Junior High and Naperville North (she is severely challenged to decide for whom she will root!).

I like to read adventure novels and mysteries, newspapers and magazines.  My favorite author is Clive Cussler, particularly his Dirk Pitt books.  Being a history geek, I enjoy my subscriptions to National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines.  I also subscribe to Time and Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune.  We get the Daily Herald here at school, too.  I tend toward these newspapers and magazines for my daily reading ""fix.""

I have an interest in community theater.  Mostly, I have been acting, but have recently taken on the director's chair.  This is both an exciting and challenging experience.

I have chaperoned Naperville eighth graders to Washington, D.C. for the last many years.  I'll be going again this year, by the way.  I also help coach my son's baseball team.  The highlight of my summers is the annual trip to Ontario for some sport fishing.  I have made this trip with family nearly every summer since I was eight years old.

I'm really quite excited about the year to come. We have a tremendous opportunity before us. Challenges, risks, growth are out there for the taking. Let's grab them by the hand and see where they'll lead. I bet it'll be an adventure.
