• Literary Focus: Science Fiction as a genre in which all of the elements of effective storytelling are present amid new surroundings
• Core Skills: literary analysis, narrative writing, core discipline vocabulary, small group connections, 6 Traits of Writing, conventions
• Assessment: Creation of a personal narrative
• Social Science Connection: All world cultures have been enriched by skillful storytelling.

Trimester Two

• Enduring Understanding: Effective written and oral persuasion requires adequate support.
• Literary Focus: Utopia/Dystopia
• Core Skills: research, persuasive writing, roots and etymologies, technological literacy, 6 Traits of Writing, effective usage, parallel structure, correct form and use of verbs and modifiers, sentence variety, paragraph construction
• Assessment: To convince an audience of the correctness of a particular point of view
• Social Science Connection: Most world cultures have experienced quests for Utopia, often with unfortunate results.

Trimester Three

• Enduring Understanding: Effective decision making requires research, consideration of options and evaluation of consequences.
• Literary Focus: the critical role of powerful writing in the creation of memorable drama.
• Core Skills: persuasive writing, analytical writing, dramatic evaluation and presentation, monologue performance,6 Traits of Writing
• Assessment: Collaborative drama project
• Social Science Connection: Cultures throughout the world are characterized by elaborate ceremonial traditions that are rooted in dramatic elements.
