Mrs. Hollander

My name is Amy Hollander. This is my second full year teaching at Kennedy, although I have taught here twice before. The first time was on the Infinity Team, as a long-term sub for Mr. Frost's science class. The second time I had the opportunity to be on the Star Team for half a year, as a long-term sub for Mrs. Frost,  who was on maternity leave. Mrs. Frost has decided to stay home with her baby for a while, so I have been a Star ever since!

Yes, I am married to the Star Team social studies teacher. We met in college, got married as soon as I graduated, and have been happily married for twenty years. We celebrated this summer by taking a trip to Alaska – which was amazing! We have two kids. Sarah is a junior at Naperville Central HS and loves singing and drama. Nathan is an eighth grader at Lincoln JHS and loves sports and computer games. The last member of our family is Mia, a cockapoo, who is totally spoiled!

I grew up in Naperville. I went to Jefferson JHS and then to Naperville North HS (go Huskies!). I have three brothers and a sister – all married now. I'm the oldest!

I love to read! I like lots of different authors and styles. I especially like the urban fantasy genre.  Some of my favorite authors are Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris, Michael Crichton, Christopher Moore, Simon Green and Neil Gaiman. I find cheesy romance novels to be a great guilty pleasure, especially enjoying stories by Nora Roberts and Mary Balogh.  I occasionally am in the mood for a good mystery and turn to the novels of Laura Joh Rowland that are set in feudal Japan. If you have favorite books, let me know. I mean it!!!! I'm always looking for new recommendations!

I also love music. I direct the pre-school choir at my church. I sing in a band called "If". We perform at coffee houses and various events.  I like to be involved in community theater and have performed in many musicals and plays. My favorite parts so far have been Nellie in South Pacific, Ado Annie in Oklahoma, and Lady MacBeth in MacBeth. I have also directed shows, been the choreographer, and designed costumes on occasion. It's a fun hobby!  

That's probably enough about me for now. We have a whole school year to get to know each other. I am looking forward to every minute of it! I hope you have a great year on the Star Team!
