What is a School Counselor?
School counselors help every student improve academic achievement, personal and social development, and career planning.  School counselors in the 21st century are high trained educators in pre K-12 settings who uphold ethical and professional standards to design, implement and manage comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling programs,that promote and enhance student success.  School counselors are certified or licensed professionals who posses a master's degree or higher in school counseling, meet the state certification/licensure standards, and abide by the laws of the states in which they are employed.

What do School Counselors do?

  • Classroom Guidance Curriculum
    • School Counselors develop and teach curriculum that is structured developmental lessons designed to assist students in achieving the desired competencies and to provide all students with th knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level.  The guidance curriculum is infused throughout the school's overall curriculum and is presented systematically through 6-12 classroom and group activities.
  • Individual Student Planning
    • School counselors coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students individually in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
  • Responsive Services
    • The traditional role of school counselors responsive services are activities meeting individual students' immediate needs, usually necessitated by life events or situations and conditions in the students' lives.  These needs require counseling, consultation, referral, peer helping or information.
  • Systems Support
    • Like any organized activity a school counseling program requires administration and management to establish, maintain and enhance the total counseling program.  Intertwined with the delivery system is the management system, which incorporates organizational processes and tools to ensure the program is organized, concrete, clearly delineated and reflective of the school's needs.
